You now have to manage your territories, acquire income, mine materials, and maintain troop counts. So, you seized power and obtained your own little territory with your chosen vagabond generals, or started a scenario as a ruler - either way, the game shifts to a different tone. DW6 Empires had it a little worse so it is an improvement, but not much. #Dynasty warriors 8 empires 3dm seriesBut most of the Empires' series has this same problem. The game begins to get a little lackluster. In fact, if you're in a vagabond unit you're actually hurting anyone in your group because they just sit there and don't level while the whole world is 10+ levels ahead of your generals. Either way the game does not reward you for playing as a free officer. Eventually the AI will decide it's time for you to be the ruler - or you can just revolt and seize power yourself. You'll get trinkets every now and then from those characters, but no special dialogue, special in-battle effects, or strategy effects other than a little indicator that they are your best friend/spouse. You can marry someone or become a sworn sibling with a neat cutscene, but that's it. There are little cutscenes here and there but nothing of actual substance. It starts to get really repetitive and boring. You can also serve as an officer in a kingdom you choose, which is fun for a while, but you'll basically end up controlling the kingdom by proxy, lest you get stuck in an endless game of just doing little raids and quests for hours upon hours with seemingly no progress towards the main objective of the game. Lots of things to do, you can start as a free officer and help in battles as a mercenary, do unique quests like assassinations, make friends, create a vagabond unit, and just in general roam the land. It's pretty fun when you first start out.
